Resort Feature : Maravagi Resort, Solomon Islands

Maravagi Resort is a 2 - 3 hour boat ride from Honiara depending on the sea conditions. The resort is neat and tidy, the accommodation basic but clean, and the local staff are very friendly. Food is very good and reasonably priced and the oceanfront dining + communal area is a great place to chill out and read a book or sit and chat about the day's activities.

Snorkelling and diving right off the front of the resort is awesome and great for night dives. About a 5 minute boat ride away, at the entrance to the channel leading into Maravag Island, you can dive the Devils Highway. Plant yourself on the wall at 9m and watch the manta rays coming in to feed right over the top of you: a truly awesome sight and a huge adrenalin rush! With a 4 knot current through the channel, this is not a dive for the inexperienced or faint hearted.

All the diving around Maravagi is spectacular. You can dive walls that drop away to 70m, caves & bommies, and see all manner of fish, rays, sharks, turtles and dolphins. And then there are the wrecks! During WWII, the waters between Honiara and the Florida Islands became a huge battlefield, resulting in a huge number of wrecks littering the ocean floor. Depending on your dive experience you can dive Japanese seaplane wrecks at 40m or the Kiwi ship "Moa" at 35-45m, the impressive"Aaron Ward" at 50-70m and a Japanese tanker. The muck diving is equally incredible and all this can be done by open dive tender from Marivagi Resort. The sites are anywhere from 10min to 1.5 hours away from the resort depending on the weather.

Maravagi is a great place to combine reef and wreck diving, and to experience the marine bio diversity of the Solomons Islands.

Liveaboard diving: The ultimate dive holiday

Liveaboard Picture. Why is it that once our clients have dived from a liveaboard dive boat they seldom go back to land based options ?

The avid diver knows the advantages of live-aboard diving - you cruise to remote unspoiled reefs to find superior marine life, big pelagic fish and undamaged reefs. Since the big live-aboards anchor at the dive sites you can do up to four dives per day, including a night dive.

With air-conditioned cabins, sumptuous chef-prepared meals, hostess in attendance and unparalleled crew generally service (up to one crew member for every three passengers), the live-aboards offer some of the best diving in South Pacific.

Experience exciting drift and wall dives, superb fish life with BIG schools of pelagic fish, night dives, soft corals, a shark feeding station. On a liveaboard trip you will see more spectacular marine life in the course of one day than you would see on a whole trip elsewhere.

Liveaboard vessels will spoil you for future diving. Huge undercover dive decks, unique entry/exit platforms and large inflatable dive enders make diving a breeze.

Set departures

All liveaboards have set schedules, mostly 7, 9 or 14 days, although some offer 3 or 4 days in Queensland.

Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu

Espiritu Santo, just a short flight from Port Vila, is home to the "SS President Coolidge" - one of the World's largest diveable shipwrecks. The luxury liner was converted to a troopship during WWII and sank just off the coast, making easy access available from the shore or a boat. To explore the "Coolidge" in its entirety would take more than 20 different dives to the ballrooms, cargo holds, decks and superstructure, with an amazing collection of jeeps, trucks, cases of rifles and other articles of war to be seen.

But Espiritu Santo has a lot more to offer than just the "Coolidge": colourful reef diving, sport fishing, kayaking, snorkelling, tours to local Kustom villages, the picturesque Blue Holes, magnificent beaches, conservation areas and caves to explore.

AQUAMARINE

The most qualified dive shop in Vanuatu, Aquamarine is a registered PADI Resort, SSI Instructor Training Facility, SDI Instructor Development Facility and TDI Instructor Trainer Facility. Diving the Coolidge promises to be the most adventurous wreck diving you may ever do and to ensure your safety and fun, Aquamarine has the most highly trained guides on the Coolidge. They have logged over 30,000 combined dives on the wreck and are fully qualified to cater to novice, advanced and technical divers. Aquamarine services include boat and shore dives to all of Santo's wreck and reef sites including Million Dollar Point and the SS Tucker, as well as gear hire, Nitrox, and Trimix. Guides may also be hired for personal tours - ideal for photographers and qualified tech divers.

CORAL QUAYS RESORT

Experience the traditional charm of a lovely estate villa, combined with the soothing effect of sparkling blue waters that lap the beachfront.

Coral Quays is an oceanfront resort featuring superior individual private ensuite bungalows blending into 6 acres of lush tropical gardens. The resort is located in San Michel Bay, just a breath away from the town, with easy access to all the activities, tours and dive locations of Espiritu Santo. Snorkel off the jetty, try your hand at sport-fishing, relax by the swimming pool or enjoy a traditional Melanesian massage before a romantic waterside dinner in one of Vanuatu's finest restaurants.

Sipadan

If you are looking for a high standard of diving, beautiful picturesque resorts and excellent food, then the resorts around Sipadan are hard to beat.

If you enjoy the benefits of Liveaboard diving, but prefer to have your feet firmly on the ground, then these are the resorts for you.

Sipadan Water Village Mabul Water Bungalow Kapalai Dive Resort
Sipadan Water Village Mabul Water Bungalow Kapalai Dive Resort

Each resort operates a ‘fully inclusive’ package, including up to 5 dives each day and 5 meals a day.  When you are not diving, you are replenishing your energy levels with buffet meals, which are a great combination of exotic Malaysian and European fare, with the accent leaning towards fresh seafood.

TurtlesThe diving is also a great combination. In the morning you complete 2 dives around Sipadan itself, where you have the opportunity to see schooling hammerheads, bumphead parrotfish and great walls of barracuda.  The giant turtles that Sipadan are famous for are everywhere and you will see them on each dive.

Your remaining boat dive is around the islands of Mabul or Kapalai, which are a treat for muck divers and fans of macro. In a single dive you could see crocodile fish, leaffish, frogfish, scorpionfish, all sorts of nudibranch, ghost pipefish, octopus, cuttlefish and many others.  Most divers would be rapt to see one of these species on a dive, but in Sipadan it is difficult to know which direction to point your camera.  Luckily these dives are shallow so you have plenty of time to take them all in.

After your 3 boat dives, you have unlimited dives on the house reefs surrounding your resort.  You can have a sunset dive looking for Mandarin Fish, or an evening dive. Whenever you choose to go into the water there is a friendly staff member waiting to lift your gear onto your back and assist you into the water.

The resorts are all overwater villages, carefully laid out so that each chalet has a sense of privacy.  It is never far to walk to the dive shop, restaurant or activity rooms and some have wireless broadband so you have internet access from anywhere in the resort.

Each resort is subtly different and our staff have inspected them so we can point out the best resort to suit your requirements. We can guarantee you will not regret choosing Sipadan as your next dive destination.
