Tranquillity Eco Resort, located on the beachfront on Moso Island, a 25 boat ride from Port Vila, has been blessed with an abundance of wonderfully diverse marine life right on its doorstep. This is arguably one of the best diving areas around the Vila area.
Diving at Tranquillity Eco-tourism Resort
With over 18 different incredible dive sites, visibility rarely below 25 mtrs and warm water temperatures ranging from 23 – 30 º, diving at Tranquillity is magic.
Here you’ll find reefs and drop-offs, Coral Gardens, Swim-throughs, Cave & Thermal vents, Bommies, Drift Dives and Two Wreck dives, plus the house reef, right in front of the Resort, which is on a 114 mtr drop-off.
There’s a huge range of soft and hard corals, reef fish and, on certain sites large pelagics may be seen. Often you’ll see eagle rays and a range of marine mammals like dolphins and dugongs.
Some of Tranquillity's best dive sites.
Tranquillity Bommies (Shore or Boat Dive).
Scattered coral Bommies on white sand covered in both hard and soft coral. Fish in all shapes and sizes abound here, and Turtle sightings are common. Dugongs often visit this area and although timid, have stayed with divers for more than an hour or so. For a bit of added interest, a pile of buoys and rings from a W.W.II anti submarine net here have lots of small fish making their home in the tangle of steel.
Moso Drift (Boat Dive)
A drift dive, sometimes with quite strong currents, reveals lots and lots of fish – large pelagic and a good possibility of Sharks, Barracuda, Grey Whalers, Eagle Rays and other interesting marine life.
Owens Reef
There’s a greater diversity of species of coral and fish on this small reef than many other dive sites. At depths of 1 – 20 mtrs, it includes swim through coral and gorgonian overhangs and lots of fish.
Wreck of M.V BELAMA
A 200 ton island freighter badly damaged in a cyclone was scuttled close to Owens reef. It’s now a diveable wreck where you can swim around the bulk of the wreck then across the bow section a few meters away. This is a great introduction to wreck diving without having to dive below 20mtr.
Wreck of M.V. Roimata
An ex Vanuatu government Tug boat scuttled in 40 meters of water. The wreck was specially prepared for divers with entry and exit holes and is sitting upright on the coral and sand bottom. It’s an ideal wreck experience for advanced divers and lies at a depth of 40 mtrs.
Bottle Fish Cave
This is an interesting dive site featuring large fish and the scattered remnants of Coca-Cola bottles, plates and mugs from the tugboats which used to maintain the anti-submarine nets during WWII. Large grouper and wrasse are often seen here. There is an interesting swim through and close by there are several thermal vents with hot water.
Grouper Gutter
Here large cod and numerous other fish congregate around the gutter. There are lots of barracuda and a 350-kg grouper has been seen here several times.
Paul’s Rock. (Boat Dive)
Paul’s rock is a rough oval shape reef with a number of swim throughs plus a drop off wall. Many tame fish exists on this reef, as it is a “Taboo Reef” for custom native owners. Fish feeding is part of the dive.
Hat Island. (Boat Dive)
There are several dive sites at this location. They include the Taj Mahal cave and wall dive, the Gorgonian Fan Circuit, Acrapora Reef and drop-off and Hat Island Safari – an underwater trek through gutters and bommies where the big things are.
